Rethinking our Relationship with Work

A new year is coming upon us and this invites a barrage of new routines, ideas, and plans to reinvent how we run our lives and their many aspects. This also means it’s time to re-evaluate our relationship with work.
The pandemic has introduced us to a new perspective when it comes to how we spend our time, and given that a good chunk of our days goes into work, it’s only right that we aim for sustainability. So, in our approach toward a healthier relationship with work, we consider three foundational values: trust, respect, and mindfulness, as our guide on how to act, interact and react.

Learning instead of Failing

Whether you are new to the job or have been there for a while, every day offers an opportunity to learn. Routine office work isn’t making the cut anymore. If we want to stay energized and engaged at work, there has to change. When there is change, we have to adapt, and the process isn’t always smooth. With that, we should incorporate the willingness to accept feedback and learn, and not let our failures weigh us down. Growth is a gradual process, and sometimes, it’s all in the mindset – so develop a sustainable one.

Establishing Better Boundaries

You know what they say: good fences make good neighbors.
Having been a practice founded in respect, establishing defined boundaries means that your personal space doesn’t get intruded into, or your business being meddled with. This also applies to simple things like feeling the need to respond to work emails during mealtime or before bed. If your manager demands this much attention to work after you’ve logged out, it’s time you assert your need to disconnect and put your notifications on mute until the next day.
This is generally the concern with agreeable people, who tend to be okay with people getting in their way, giving unsolicited comments, or outright testing their boundaries. For this year, we encourage you to protect your space and energy, so you can start anew with fewer distractions and stress.

Never Leaving Your Values at the Door

We have reached a point in our lives when people are keener to take a stand, especially when it comes to their values. Our collective experience with the pandemic has pushed us to fight, not only for our survival but also for our right to acceptance, belongingness, and equal opportunity. That said, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has moved from a trend into a full-on movement in corporate environments – and that’s a good thing, too!
Discrimination proves to have negative physical and psychological effects to subjects, and this undermines their ability to perform at their best. Not only does this affect the growth of the company, but it also trickles down into intimate social units like families and friendships. That being said, help create a safe space in your own workplace and invite everyone else in. Such an initiative can go a long way.
